Core Competencies

Interfacial develops advanced materials and manufacturing process platforms across five core competency areas: advanced polymer composites, sustainable materials, additive manufacturing, specialty compounding, and executive-level commercialization networks. These capabilities help move programs from concept through scale-up—especially in transportation, building & construction, medical, and consumer markets.

Polymer Composite Materials

Advanced Composites

Interfacial has more than two decades of experience developing cost-effective, high-performance polymer composites for consumer, transportation, and building & construction applications. We specialize in natural-fiber composite systems engineered for strong mechanical performance and compelling total cost. This work includes the early development of Magma Flooring, now part of Interfacial’s Engineered Substrates division.

Unique Innovations

  • Lightweight composite substrates (stiffness-to-weight improvement)
  • Infrared-reflective capstocks (reduced heat build-up)
  • Thermoplastic composites with very low coefficient of thermal expansion, CTE (dimensional stability)
  • Natural-fiber composites for injection molding and extrusion applications

Recycled & Bio-Based Materials

Sustainable Materials

Interfacial formulates sustainable polymer composites and compounds using recycled and bio-based feedstocks—designed to meet or exceed application requirements while staying cost-effective. This includes development work supporting high bio-based content and flame-retardant performance (e.g., deTerra®).

Innovations

  • Low-cost, high-performance composites using continuous double-belt press technology
  • High-performance natural-fiber composites based on 100% recycled polymer feedstocks
  • Highly bio-based, flame-retardant polymeric materials
Composites derived from agricultural waste streams
  • Hyperbranched bio-based polymers enabled via reactive extrusion

AM Materials & Processes

Additive Manufacturing

Interfacial has been developing materials and processes for additive manufacturing for nearly a decade, with multiple programs focused on industrial applications across medical, building & construction, microelectronics, and consumer markets.

Innovations

  • High-performance soluble support materials
  • Functional AM thermoplastics (conductivity, clarity, enhanced mechanical properties)
  • Materials and process technologies for printing polyolefins
  • Materials and processes for decorative precision deposition (2.1D)

Custom Compounds & Masterbatches

Specialty Compounding

Interfacial has more than a decade of experience developing and manufacturing specialty compounds for medical, consumer, transportation, and building & construction applications. We support niche to sclaed programs with assets designed for quick changeovers, consistent quality, and rapid scaling—from small batches through truckload quantities.

Innovations

  • Custom color compounds for low-volume, just-in-time applications
  • Highly filled masterbatches (minerals, carbon, natural fiber)
  • High performance pellets for large format additive manufcturing (LFAM)
  • Hot-melt adhesive compounds
  • Reactive extrusion compounds and additives

Commercialization & Scale-Up Network

Executive Networks

Across more than two decades and hundreds of development projects, Interfacial has built a strong executive network that helps innovations move from pilot to successful launch. We align grassroots champions with executive stakeholders to accelerate adoption, commercialization, and scale.
